Kevin McCool Fund Helps Emerging Kenyan Athletes Run the Eldoret City Marathon
Ten athletes will take on the Eldoret City Marathon on Sunday, April 27, thanks to support from the Kevin McCool Memorial Fund, managed by DBA Africa. The fund helps up-and-coming runners who lack the funds to take part in races, giving them a chance to grow in the sport of long-distance running.
In Kenya, athletics is more than a sport, it is often a dream for many. Young athletes across the country train hard every day, hoping to follow in the footsteps of world-famous stars like Faith Kipyegon and Eliud Kipchoge. But even the most talented athletes can face major barriers. Many struggle to afford race entry fees, transport, and proper equipemnt. Without support, they can go years training but rarely compete.
The Kevin McCool Memorial Fund aims to change that. By covering the cost of entering races like the Eldoret City Marathon, the fund opens doors for athletes who might otherwise be left out. This not only helps them gain experience and exposure, but also strengthens sports development across Kenya.
The fund honours the memory of Kevin McCool, a passionate runner and proud UK army officer. Kevin believed in working hard, helping others, and living life with purpose. Though he passed away, his legacy continues through the runners supported by the fund. Each athlete will wear a special McCool Running Vest, showing their thanks and running in his memory.
But the fund doesn’t just support individual runners. It also helps the wider athletics community and sports eco-system. Many races in Kenya face financial pressure. Organisers often see dozens of athletes show up on race day without having registered, hoping for a last-minute chance to compete. This creates challenges for managing these events hindering the events and their future plans.
DBA Africa is proud to manage the Kevin McCool Memorial Fund. With a mission rooted in youth empowerment and sports development, DBA Africa works across Kenya and beyond to make sure no athlete is left behind due to lack of funding or opportunity. Whether it's through training, competition, or mentorship, DBA is committed to unlocking the power of sport.
This year’s Eldoret City Marathon marks just the beginning. With more support, the Kevin McCool Memorial Fund hopes to give many more young athletes the chance to compete, improve, and follow their dreams.
