DBA Coach Andrew Amonde Set for Key Role in Shujaa’s Return to HSBC SVNS Circuit

Kenya 7s is set to make their return to the HSBC SVNS Circuit this weekend in Dubai, following their triumphant promotion from the Challenger Series. With a youthful squad and new leadership, the team will rely heavily on the experience of Andrew Amonde, a former captain turned coach who also serves as the DBA Rugby Academy coach.

After their relegation in 2023, Shujaa proved their resilience by beating Germany to reclaim their place among rugby’s 7s elite. The recently announced squad introduces two new co-captains, George Ooro and Samuel Asati, who will lead the team. With years of international experience, Coach Amonde’s leadership is sure to help the young squad navigate challenges posed by top-tier teams like New Zealand, Fiji, Argentina, and France.

New Captains, New Sponsors, New Opportunities

Shujaa’s return to the HSBC Sevens Circuit has been bolstered by the backing of key sponsors SportPesa and Safaricom through Mpesa. These partnerships aim to address financial challenges that have previously hindered player performance and team preparations.

At the SportPesa sponsorship announcement, Lyle Asiligwa, speaking on behalf of DBA Africa, encouraged players to use their time in the national jersey to build personal brands. He pointed to former stars like Dennis Ombachi, known as The Roaming Chef, and Collins Injera, both of whom have leveraged their rugby careers to achieve global recognition.

Facing Giants with Confidence

Kenya 7s’ co-captains, George Ooro and Samuel Asati, have already shown promise under the guidance of Head Coach Kevin ‘Bling’ Wambua, particularly during the Challenger Series and their 9th-place finish at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Olympics provided crucial experience against top rugby sevens teams, which the squad will look to build upon in the HSBC SVNS Circuit.

As Assistant Coach, Andrew Amonde brings a wealth of knowledge and a strategic mindset to the team. His role extends beyond technical coaching, as he works to instill confidence and discipline in the young squad. As the DBA Rugby Academy Ambassador & Coach,, Amonde has consistently developed talented players, and his efforts now focus on ensuring Shujaa are ready to face any opposition.

A Comeback for the Ages

The return of Kenya 7s to the HSBC Sevens Circuit symbolizes not just a sporting resurgence but also the resilience and dedication of Rugby Kenya. This journey has been supported by grassroots initiatives like the DBA Rugby Academy, which bridges the gap between potential and performance.

With Andrew Amonde as a mentor and new sponsorship ensuring stability, the team is well-positioned to make an impact both on and off the pitch. As Shujaa takes to the global stage, they carry the hopes of a nation and the promise of a brighter future for rugby in Kenya.
